People born in the second half of the baby boom have had an increased risk of homelessness. According to a recent San Francisco Chronicle article, 40% of those who are homeless and 50 or older, are homeless for the first time. In her "Aging Among the Homeless Population: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions" presentation. Dr. Margot Kushel of UCSF, talks about the impact on aging for older adults and that "50 is the new 75." For the most part, what causes people who become homeless for the first time when they're younger than 50 years old is different than late onset homelessness.

Sacramento Aging2.0 has partnered with the Sacramento Health 2.0 team and will host a series of Fireside Chats on homelessness into 2020. Together we will offer the opportunity the public to understand the causes, conditions and constraints of our healthcare system and other forces that makes this a particularly challenging societal issue affecting us all. Towards the end of 2020, we will host a major joint event to foster innovation, creativity and solutions through a teamwork environment, bringing together subject matter experts including social workers, other powerful voices in the homeless community, civic leaders and healthcare advocates for the unsheltered.

Join us for the first Fireside Chat of the series on December 2, 2019 from 6-8 pm at the Volunteers of American Veterans Services (10618 Schirra Avenue in Mather). It will be an informal opportunity for you to meet Kia Phillips from Volunteers of America and Jade Smith from Veterans Resource Centers of America to understand how homelessness impacts our Veterans and what efforts are currently underway to assist them. We'll identify opportunities to further address this challenge. The event is free. Please RSVP since we will be providing light refreshments and drinks.
