Kansas City

Join other KC aging experts, advocates and innovators for our monthly Innovation in Aging event. Each month Aging2.0 Kansas City presents speakers covering topics related to aging and innovation followed by in-depth discussion.

Our first speaker will be Jeff Burns, M.D., MS, Edward H. Hashinger Professor of Medicine at KUMC, co-director of the KU Alzheimer's Disease Center and also Director of the Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Unit and the Alzheimer and Memory Clinic.

Dr. Burns will discuss the LEAP! program, which stands for Lifestyle Enrichment for Alzheimer's Prevention, is a six-week program founded by the KU Alzheimer's Disease Center (KU ADC). KU ADC is among the elite centers named by National Institute of Aging as a nationally designated and funded Alzheimer's Disease Center. The LEAP! program fits with a number of clinical trials looking at the connections between exercise and Alzheimer's. Early success with the program, including a "LEAP! Guide to Smart Aging", has led KU ADC to seek ways to expand. Garmin is a strategic partner for the program, including the supply of activity monitors through which researchers evaluate activity and adherence. The project also has had a role in data integration in relation to the Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Our second speaker will be Angie Winkler, LPC, Clinical Liaison for Signature Psychiatric Hospital/Signature Behavioral Healthcare.

Angie will discuss Innovative Treatments for Seniors with Depression. Signature Psychiatric Hospital offers a comprehensive continuum of care for a wide range of psychiatric disorders in adults, senior adults and adolescents. Signature's philosophy is treatment is based on the belief that, through combination of medically managed care, therapeutic intervention and education, patients can learn to effectively manage their illnesses and cope with the effects on their lives. One in five adults over the age of 55 will experience a mental health concern. Hope and treatment is available through Signature’s Silver Lining program.
